10 Lovely Jewelry Trends 2017

If January has you keen to update your look with a statement piece of jewelry, then you have come to the right place. With the growth of online marketplaces such as Etsy, we have never had more choice from the comfort of our own homes. But before you start browsing online, let me tell you about ten trends to look out for in 2017.

1. The Indie trend

The demand for something not of the high street is growing rapidly. We all want something unique, but without paying a premium for it. Etsy was really onto something when they made it easy for jewelry artists to sell their pieces without needing the technical know-how to build an e-store.

2. Multi-metals

Last year saw a boom in rose gold sales. This year, expect to see even more variety in metal colors and combinations. It is no longer simply a choice of gold versus silver; you can wear both, and more.

3. Gemstones

TV shows like Strictly Come Dancing and the many televised red carpet events we have seen really whet our appetite for sparkles last year. Expect to see more costume and fashion jewelry replicating the look with gemstones in 2017.

4. Statement

My current favorite piece of jewelry that I wear every day is a white gold ring with little cat ears on the band. I am wearing my crazy cat lady status with pride. Charities have picked up on this trend already; you might have noticed the semi-colon suicide awareness items on social media. Statements worn as jewelry is definitely a growing trend to get on board with in 2017.

5. Motivational messages

I am wholeheartedly behind these messages moving from a tattoo trend to a less permanent bracelet or pendant. ‘Carpe Diem’ might not always be your motto, but for a season or two you can wear it on a piece of jewelry and see if you like it, before committing to the ink.

6. Personalized

Name pendants are back this year. I am not sure how I feel about this trend; it is a very acquired taste. What do you think about wearing your name around your neck? Apart from the obvious issue of strange men knowing your name, I find it just a little too recent since it was the last trendy. I like my retro to be a fine vintage!

7. Birthstone

Speaking of retro, we will see a lot more birthstone jewelry this year. I love this trend as it reminds me of my first Amethyst pendant that I had as a youngster in the late eighties.

8. Stacking rings

Far from being a new trend for 2017, but a continuation from the last two years, stacking rings are not going away yet. They are really cute.

9. Hammered metal

Another trend that has stuck around for a while is hammered metal. This looks especially good in a wide cuff bracelet or a chunky ring. Its popularity so far makes it sure to stick around for at least another year.

10. Resin set curiosity pieces

I have saved my personal favorite for last; resin pieces with unusual contents set within them. I really love the fairy garden trend for dried flowers and moss set in epoxy resin.

Semi-clear rings, bangles, and pendants can be found easily on Etsy. More and more independent jewelry artists are producing them now due to a growing demand for unusual and interesting pieces.
